Yes of course you can. You can share folders on your usb hdd with smb just like all other folders. Or run a ftp server on pc side wich serves the files on your hdd.

wiimc can’t see the shared folder on the hdd. why ????
netgear eva2000 can play from the folder, so the config. on the pc is ok.
I have inst. ios58 (usb 2.0 support)
