Mod’ing to store backups on a HDD -don’t want to break WiiMC

I want to mod my Wii so I can store my games on a HDD and not have to use the DVDs. I was pointed to this tutorial by a friend:

Just wanted to see if doing anything in there would render WiiMC unusable. The main thing that caught my eye was WiiMC stating it needs IOS58 and this one saying you need IOS36.

I’m new to the Wii Homebrew stuff and just don’t know if that matters.
