    Hello
I am in the process of converting some dvds I have into compressed video for use primarily for wiimc and am seeking advice on encoding settings

I will first be converting the dvd to an iso using dvd shrink, but not compressing it, (should I remove the 5.1 audio track and just have the 2 channel?)

Then I have a program called “any video converter pro” that I will be using to convert them to a smaller file.

There are lot of settings and I wasn’t quite sure which codecs work best with which formats and so forth
I was thinking MP4’s using the xvid codec (because its one I’ve heard of) @ 3000 bitrate with a frame size of 720×480
Is that good? Like I said there are lots of codec and format options

There is also one that it claims is specifically for the wii. It is an avi format using a “mjpeg” codec.
I tried it….and it actually increased the size of the file. So not sure what to make of that. Any thoughts?

Thanks very much for your help and for your work on wiimc

I use the old converter autogk http://www.free-codecs.com/download/autogk.htm which is far easier to use imo and is even capable of converting dvd format video with some limits. divx/xvid only.

anyway what you convert your audio to isnt all that important as wiimc downmixes 5.1 to 2 channel (stereo) but in my opinion you should save space and just use 2 channel unless you want it later for other reasons.

all video is shrunk to 480p/480i (or 576i non usa format) in wiimc since the wii is limited to 480 Standard Definition format.

as far as i can tell with my smb shares anything plays in wiimc even mkv so im unaware of any real limitations that you should worry about. except no x264/h264 support so far.

divx and xvid should play pefectly no matter what settings you use.
