Hello!
I just burned a DVD with some AVI files and when I try to access the disc in WiiMC by clicking on “Data DVD” under the Videos sub-menu, I get a screen that says “Expection (DSI) occured!” After 8 seconds, the Homebrew Channel comes back up.
I got my Wii in March of 2007 and have played regular video DVDs under WiiMC with no problems. I burned the DVD with ImgBurn and used the following settings:
Data Type: MODE1/2048
File System: ISO9660
Folder/File Name Length: Level X – 219 Characters
Character Set: ASCIIDo I have to change the last two options to something like Level 2, Standard Character Set? I don’t want to waste another blank DVD if this will not solve the problem!
Thanks!

December 14, 2010 at 8:49 pm #27978cyrus800ParticipantOK, I just tried burning a disc using the “ISO9660 + Joliet” file system instead of just “ISO9660” and now I’m getting “Error opening dvd:/” messages. This is really frustrating!

December 16, 2010 at 6:38 pm #27980cyrus800ParticipantOK, I just updated to WiiMC 1.1.1 and I’m still having the same problem!
Yes, the files play fine on my PC and also in WiiMC if I put them on the SD card instead of the DVD. As for the media I’m using, I’ve got Memorex DVD-Rs. The funny thing is, is that other homebrew programs that I’ve got for my Wii (like Genesis Plus GX and SNES9X GX) can read files off of these Memorex DVD-Rs with no problem! Why does WiiMC crash?
December 16, 2010 at 10:02 pm #27976cadbuscaParticipantSo when you click on Data DVD, you get a crash instead of a directory listing? Or do you get a directory listing and crash when you open a file?
I assume on the PC that you get the directory listing when you click on your DVD device and that you can then open and play these files. I would suggest you setup your WII SMB to access your PC DVD and see if you can access the PC DVD directory and play the files that way.
If these all work then the WII should work with DATA DVD too. Mine works fine.
December 16, 2010 at 10:11 pm #27981rodriesKeymasterWhat IOS is WiiMC using? What IOS is Snes9x GX using?
December 17, 2010 at 1:55 am #27982cyrus800ParticipantOut of curiosity, I tried burning the AVIs to an HP DVD-R and WiiMC is still crashing.
When WiiMC starts up, I click on the Videos icon in the upper bar, then on “Data DVD” in the sub-menu. I get a new window that says “Loading DVD…,” then WiiMC crashes with the “Exception (DSI) occurred!” message.
I tried setting up SMB and am having problems. I have my IP address and have enabled sharing for the folder containing the videos, but am unsure of which username and password to use. I tried both leaving it blank and using the username and password for my router, but still am receiving a failure message when I try to connect. What username and password am I supposed to use?
Tantric, how do I find out which IOS programs are using?
December 17, 2010 at 3:05 am #27983rodriesKeymasterClick on the WiiMC logo. It’ll say in the upper-right hand corner.
December 17, 2010 at 4:02 pm #27984cadbuscaParticipantleave username and password blank unless you set sharing on your PC to require them. You also need to set permissions to “Everyone” for both “sharing” and “security”.
December 18, 2010 at 9:11 pm #27985cyrus800ParticipantWiiMC can’t connect to the shared folder if both the username and password are left blank, and I haven’t changed any settings regarding sharing on the network. I right-click on the folder, click on “Sharing and Security…,” and enable the “Share this folder on the network” option. Is there any way to check and see if Windows has password-protected sharing on my network?
Tantric, both WiiMC and SNES9X GX report that they are using IOS 58.
January 2, 2011 at 8:55 pm #27986cyrus800ParticipantI have some news to report!
I got SMB sharing to work. The problem was with Norton Internet Security, which was blocking my Wii from accessing my computer. The Norton program doesn’t load every time my computer starts up (what a pain!), so I had no way of configuring its settings initially.
Anyway, now that SMB is working, I can access AVIs that are both on my computer and burned to a disc that resides in its disc drive. Still, I would like to figure out why WiiMC crashes when it tries to load a disc in the Wii drive!
