I have a hacked Wii using the letterbomb softmod. I started getting the “update is available” message when running Wiimc. Is it safe to run the update from the message or is there another safer way?

Yes.You can update using the auto-update feature inside wiimc,or just download the latest version from the downloads section on this site.or using the homebrew browser.All are safe.
I always prefer to check the forums for a couple days or even weeks before I update. Some fixes crash some of the things I use every now and again. I stuck to 1.1.2(or was it 1.1.3?) for quite a while.
