So I setup WiiMC about a month ago and it’s been fantastic. Seriously, I love this bit of homebrew, Nintendo should have included this functionality in the Wii to begin with, but didn’t.
Now, I’m having a problem. I haven’t changed any settings at all, but suddenly over the last few days I started getting a -16 error when I first try to connect.
Basically, I’ve been using WiiMC to stream AVI files from my PC. I’d definitely describe myself as a “power user” on the PC side, I know I setup the Samba stuff correctly (this was confirmed by the fact that it worked flawlessly for a month). Now, suddenly every time I start WiiMC I will go to my shared folder (“Videos”), and when I click it I get the loading spinner for a minute then it comes back with a -16 (“Unable to connect”) error. I’ll restart my router and sometimes that will fix it, other times it won’t connect until I delete my connection in the Wii settings and then set it up again. Usually once I do that, it will connect but the video won’t stream properly, it will buffer every a few seconds or so (I also tried increasing the buffer to 100% in the WiiMC settings from 30% which it was initially set to – that made no difference except that it buffers for a longer period of time). This happens whether I access WiiMC via the channel or through the HBC BTW.
I’m sure it’s not my router, I have other wireless devices (2 laptops, and iPod touch and a tablet) that all connect properly. I have 2 bars on the Wii when I setup the connection (three is the max). I’m not “crowding” my bandwidth, this happens even if all the other wireless devices I own are not connected.
Any insight any of you can provide regarding this mysterious issue would be greatly appreciated. I’m pretty novice when it comes to softmods on the Wii (I’ve done it twice, first time with Bannerbomb, this time I used the newest one where you do it through the email menu on the Wii – I can’t remember what it’s called atm, letterbomb maybe?). The only thing I use the Wii for is to stream media and to play 1-2 games (retail, on disc) from time to time so I haven’t done any updates or anything like that that would cause this to happen.
So, any suggestions from you nice smart people? I look forward to any advice you can throw my way. 🙂
EDIT: Grammar.
