ive tried everything i can think of, and read every post i could find involving ftp. searching the forum for “ftp” gives no results because “ftp” is too short, so thats the first problem.
heres the setup:
Server:
filezilla ftp server set up on my home computer, standard port 21.Remote wii 1:
down the road from my server machine, wiimc connects to the ftp share fine, streaming movies works fine except every avi file fails, but thats the least of my problems, at least something worksRemote wii 2:
located about 45 minutes by car away from the server, wiimc connects to the server almost instantly and then displays only an empty directory and “up one level.”on remote wii 2 i have tried everything i can think of, ive even used the settings.xml file from remote wii 1, and no matter what i get an empty directory. smb shares work fine on this wii, and setting up an ftp sever on its local network results in flawless performance, including avi file playback.
ive tried forwarding port 21 to remote wii 2, ive tried putting remote wii 2 in a DMZ. i can connect to the ftp server fine from a computer on remote wii 2’s network, just not from the wii.
on the server side the log shows the same entries including a successful transfer of the file directory for connections from both remote wii 1 and remote wii 2.
the only possible problem i can think of is some kind of timeout on remote wii 2 because the server is located so far away, but i can confirm that there is no timeout on the server side, ive even disabled timeouts on the server machine.
the two wiis are running the same version of wiimc (the most current version), and using the same settings.xml file. yet only the one down the road from my server (on a different network) can get a successful directory listing and file playback.
please help me out here, im out of things to troubleshoot.

you can use FTPUse to mount the ftp server as a local drive, then share that drive and access the files as smb. the only flaw ive found with this is that i cannot get subtitles to work correctly, but at least ive got the video.
http://www.ferrobackup.com/ftpuse/ heres a link to the program, its really easy to use.
