i’m using Windows 7 64-bit Professional, and i couldn’t get the SMB sharing to work until i uninstalled Windows Update KB980232 (in addition to the rest of the options mentioned earlier in the thread). i’ve read that worst-case scenario, someone will crash you if you connect to their SMB server and they exploit the vulnerability, so it doesn’t sound like it’s that risky.
for now, i’m fine with leaving out that update, until either: a) Microsoft fixes their SMB (which is doubtful…) or b) the developers make WiiMC work with Windows 7’s finicky SMB.
now, i don’t remember exactly what steps i took in order to get WiiMC to connect to my Windows 7 SMB shares, but it should more or less be the following:
1) under “Control Panel”, select “Network and Sharing Center” and “Advanced Sharing Settings” and i set the following options:
-Turned on network Discovery
-Turned on File and printer sharing
-Turned off password protected sharing
-Turned off Use User accounts and passwords to connect to other computers
2) type “Local Security Policy” in your Start Menu, and right-click “Run as Administrator” if needed
3) select “Local Policies” directory from the folder tree on the left, and select subdirectory “Security Options”
4) under the Policy Browser main window, find and select “Network security:Minimum session security for NTLM SSP (including RPC based) Clients”, double-click it, and untick both of the boxes so that both “Require NTLMv2 session security” and “Require 128-bit encryption” are disabled, click Apply, and close.
5) find “Network security:Minimum session security for NTLM SSP (including RPC based) Servers” and repeat the step above.
6) find “Network Security LAN Manager authentication level”, double-click it and in the dropdown menu, select “Send LM & NTLM responses”, click Apply, and close.
and if WiiMC still cannot connect to your SMB share…
7) find and uninstall Windows Update KB980232
