Japanese subs not displaying

I’m trying to watch a Japanese show with subtitles IN JAPANESE in an srt file, but I’m not having any luck. I’ve tried several codings, including Shift JIS, but I keep getting the boxes. I even changed WiiMC’s language to Japanese, and it downloaded the font. What am I doing wrong?

Did you read the FAQ? You need to replace subfont.ttf with a Japanese font. You can simply copy the Japanese font WiiMC downloaded for the menu and rename the copy to subfont.ttf.

I did, but now when I turn on the subtitles it slows the playback down and never shows even the boxes anymore.
