I ran WiiMC, then removed the SD card (to put some files on it) and put it back in. This caused the SD card to display no contents. It also caused it to hang when trying to save settings to the SD card.
I would suggest rescanning the SD card if there is an error (and it has been more than a certain time since it was previously scanned).
