Ever since WiiMC was first released, there have people having been issues getting their USB devices working. We would try to address these on a case-by-case basis, but sometimes this would in fact result in one person’s drive starting working and another person’s drive stopping working. Without going into all the history: I would like to state that the USB code WiiMC uses is actually a part of libogc, not WiiMC itself, and that this code is shared by all Wii homebrew applications. It is also worth noting that this code was not written by the WiiMC Team.
Rodries has been working to improve USB device recognition in libogc, and now he needs your help. To start with, he has written a small tester application that runs through 6 tests and writes the results to your SD card to a file named log_usb.txt. Please run the tests if you can and upload the results to this thread. Everyone’s logs (especially those with non-working devices) will help rodries sort out the compatibility issues.
December 26, 2010 at 2:55 am #27668cadbuscaParticipantThis is great news. I have an old 3.5″ Seagate that works fine but is dying, a 2.5″ from by broken old laptop thats in an enclosure but will only boot the first app loaded in the apps directory, and a thumb drive that won’t boot.
With everyones support, we can build a list of what drives work and hopefully get more of them supported. I want to buy a new drive but am reluctant to do so until I am assured that it will work with the WII. I’m away from my WII until the New Year, so I can’t test until then, but I will ask everyone using my Enhancement Pack to report their results here. If its practical, I will try to build a list of working drives and update this post in the future with those results. In order to do thid I need the people running the tests also post the name & specs of the drives they are testing and the results. This is not logged by the testing program.
December 26, 2010 at 5:41 pm #27669SkankstaParticipantThough I’ve only had problems with one previous version not detecting the drive, currently I haven’t noticed any issues. I’ve run the USB test app anyway, all tests pass, but hopefully the results can help others that are having problems.
December 26, 2010 at 6:23 pm #27670NeoWiiParticipantHi,
I done 2 logs, one with Ok HDD and the other one no.
December 26, 2010 at 9:10 pm #27671cadbuscaParticipantCould the people running the tests also post the name & specs of the drives they are testing and the results. This is not logged by the testing program.
December 26, 2010 at 9:35 pm #27672rodriesKeymasterThey could if they wish, but for these purposes it’s not important.
December 26, 2010 at 11:12 pm #27673MatokingParticipantPosting at least the make & model would be nice as it would help to clarify what drives work and what ones don’t.
My test results are attached. I did notice one thing that is odd; if I have the device connected before I run the app, then the first test is successful but every subsequent test is not. If I do not have it plugged in and plug it in when prompted then it does not work.

The drive is compatible and working with every homebrew app I have used thus far. Cfg_USB_Loader, WiiMC, MPlayerCE, WiiXplorer just to name a few.December 27, 2010 at 12:07 am #27674rodriesKeymasterboondoklife, you must unplug in between tests or the test isn’t actually run and the results are not valid. Could you try again (with the device connected on startup is fine) and unplug/replug after each test? Also, try waiting 10 seconds before pressing A to continue. This will give your drive time to spin up.
December 27, 2010 at 12:12 am #27675wederParticipantMy hard drive passed all the test, but my problem with my hard drive a seagate freeagent goflex portable 1tb is that when i start to see a movie sometimes is stop and gives me a error that it can’t find my hard drive and i have to unplug to be able to play again
December 27, 2010 at 10:39 am #27676VanitasParticipantGlad I could help!

Hey Tantric, the “not attached before launched” file should be what you need as it was unplugged and re-plugged as needed. I actually waited 15 seconds between each part so a total of 30 seconds if you add up both requests for the “A” button to be pressed between tests.
I am going to run a test with it plugged in at boot and will post it too. Not sure why it would fail all the tests but work if it is booted with it plugged in.
December 27, 2010 at 6:44 pm #27678happy.jParticipantThis drive is working with all Wiimc versions till 1.1.0
