not really, If it were just extra buttons mapped there. Keep everything the way it is, but ADD some functions to the nunchuck. That way you could use it just like it is. Or plug in the nunchuck for even more controls.

or a more realistic solution. Map all the “optional” buttons to the nunchuck. I think everyone has one.
