The problem with DVD retail copies is the DRM protection and all dvd’s have different modes of protection which wiimc may or may not be able to play.

Simply i suggest you use something like Anydvd by slysoft or some program that can remove dvd protection and make a copy of your dvd.

the sync problems your experiencing is probably the issue wiimc is having as i have seen this before and it was because the video was corrupted and had audio going out of sync with the video so i had to use autogk and re-encode a new video and it was fine.

sync problems are mainly due to corrupted video and wiimc does not so far have the ability to compensate and gets stuck in a loop trying to decode and buffer asynchronously and is getting stuck due to bad video data.
but i think most players have issues compensating for corrupted video.

the encoder your using is probably buggy as hell and is corrupting your video in the process of encoding.
AutoGK is insanely old but it works to make videos wiimc loves.

i don’t have a psp so i cant help you find a encoder that would work on both

please state the type of media you are having issues with such as
smb shares (connection to PC may be the issue)
videos via USB (your USB drive may be failing or may not work properly with your wii http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List)
videos via SD (your SD card may be failing, probably not but possible)
online media (your internet connection may be weak or your modem may be failing)

its possible your copy of wiimc is corrupted but as you said you reverted to a older version which i assume means you deleted wiimc and copied a different copy to your SD card.

if all your video is local its faintly possible your videos may not be 100% compatible with wiimc or they could be corrupted but i assume they play fine on your PC so they probably aren’t corrupted and since they worked before compatibility may not be it either.

So to be able to help you will need to provide far more details on what exactly you are doing.
    preferably step by step details.

online media must be in the format wiimc can understand which means most all online media cannot be played in wiimc (for now and maybe ever).
online media is specialy formatted to wiimc through the wiimc site itself acting as a middle man for things such as youtube.
navi-x has special wii specific content to work on wiimc.
Due to wiimc limitations, wiimc cannot accept outside video sources without a middleman or content specialy setup to work in wiimc.

I use the old converter autogk http://www.free-codecs.com/download/autogk.htm which is far easier to use imo and is even capable of converting dvd format video with some limits. divx/xvid only.

anyway what you convert your audio to isnt all that important as wiimc downmixes 5.1 to 2 channel (stereo) but in my opinion you should save space and just use 2 channel unless you want it later for other reasons.

all video is shrunk to 480p/480i (or 576i non usa format) in wiimc since the wii is limited to 480 Standard Definition format.

as far as i can tell with my smb shares anything plays in wiimc even mkv so im unaware of any real limitations that you should worry about. except no x264/h264 support so far.

divx and xvid should play pefectly no matter what settings you use.

First the wii supplies power to the usb port when off on standby mode or (orange light) the wii is only fully off on hard off or (red light) by holding the power button until it turns all the way off.

Many external hard drives have trouble working with the wii and i have tried many makes and models including imicro, rocketfish, seagate and so on.

as shown on http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List most usb drives on the market dont work or barely work on the wii due to compatibility issues with the usb control chip on the external drive.

so its possible your external drive barely works for that reason.

the drive i use is 3.5″ SATA & IDE External Drive Enclosure with USB2.0 http://www.imicro.com/item.php?item=IMBS35G-SI which works flawlessly and so far is still somewhat available (for now) if you search for model IMBS35G-SI.

for some reason the wii hardware seems to be only capable of reading dvd-r.
I have asked the same question about dvd+r and they told me that the wii hardware just doesnt recognize dvd+r media and wont be able to make it work.
