Your computer is on all the time. The Wii is not. It makes sense to me to have the PC as your downloader computer as you don’t want to interupt your torrent downloads, and leave them on as long as possible.

    Hi,

A lot of usb hard drives DO work with WiiMC. Look a little deeper in what the program does and you will find that WiiMC does a pretty good job of allowing you to play videos right on your usb hard drive.

1TB, usb 2.0 drives are the most preferred. If you have a modded Wii, you probably already have a usb hard drive hooked up to it. Use that drive.

    Hi,

Why don’t you just go SMB (Windows Network Share), it’s way better and less fiddly then setting up your own ftp server. You can take a look here if it helps.

There also is a sticky somewhere about setting up WiiMC with SMB, but the above link has some specific Win7 settings that you might find useful. If you REALLY want to go the ftp server route, Filezilla is a solid product, open source and good support. Just a heads up, you will be fiddling with it for a while to get it setup exactly the way you want (I have way to much experience with Filezilla, to the point of avoidance now!). SMB is much slicker and IMO more stable and uses less computer resources.

This might help if you have a Win7 setup

Filezilla ftp server is wonderful software but often requires LOTS of fiddling before you get it to exactly they way you like it. Before you have a permanent setup with WiiMC accessing it, I would test and ensure it’s working perfectly by accessing it from some other computer.

    Things to consider:
    – is the ftp server service starting each time you reboot your PC, or do you have it setup as an application (which is totally fine). You might not want your ftp server to start each time you reboot, then again you might.
    – Have you created the the firewall rule to allow ftp server in access to your PC ? ftp servers talk typically on port 21
    – I would use Internet Explorer on the testing computer to probe your ftp server remotely to ensure it’s running. For some reason the ftp access in Firefox is poor
    – you can also do a “telnet 192.168.?.? 21” and see if you get a response to see if the port is listening on your ftp server.

IMO, the extra resources that your pc has to shell out to keep an ftp server running is not worth it, I find SMB a lot less resource intensive. But there are lots of other reasons where an ftp server is very useful, like for external (offsite) file access. You would then just setup a port forward on your router for “ftp server” and setup a dynamic dns server so you can find it anywhere on the internet.

    Hi,

I often nuke all the partitions, reset the partitions (I use Windows) then format with fat32format.exe , it does a good job for 1-3 TB drives. Works well with WiiMC in my expereince, even on the large drives.

    Hi ejms07,
Hey man, don’t say sorry. Your WiiMC DID crash… you just were smart enough to fix it yourself 😎

    Hi Turpo,

You could just make multiple directories in the sd:apps folder. For example

    sd:appsWiiMC 1.1.9
    sd:appsWiiMC
    sd:appswiimc 1.2.0

Only issue though is, the only way to know the difference between the two icons in HBC is you must look at there application path just at the point of launch. All the multiple versions of WiiMC will have the exactly same icon… which is fine. You could make the paths a little more useful if you like instead of Wii version numbers.

Hum, SMB works. I would first try and get expereince using SMB on one of your computers first and then you have a proper example of what the SMB configuration SHOULD look like.

You should hard code the IP of of your workstation/computer in the DHCP area of your router first. That way your computer’s IP will not change
For the SMB settings in WiiMC you need the IP address of the computer and name of the share. I would recommend you DO NOT use a password on your media sharing SHARE of your computer. As example of information needed is below

General Connection name = CAN BE ANYTHING YOU LIKE
IP of computer of share = 192.168.1.10
    Share name = Les Downloads
user name = blank (that means don’t put anything in this box)
password = blank (that means don’t put anything in this box)

Thats it. If you computer is Win7 you need to do this in the advanced sharing settings area of Network and Sharing Centre. And I would personally setup your Network Profile as Work, the Home setting starts to setup this whole Homegroup Network thing that robs resources in your compture and slows things down 😎
    Advanced Settings are:
    Turn ON network descovery
Turn ON File and Print Sharing
    Turn ON Public Folder Sharing
    Turn ON Media Streaming
Turn OFF Password Protection Sharing, so you can make more generalized (like old XP) shares on your computer and each user does not NEED to have an additional user account on your computer. This is the most critical setting. Don’t fear, it’s ok. Your network is secure
Allow Windows to manage Homegroup (you can alternatively turn this off as well, but it’s up to you, it’s another click)

Go to some other computer, aka Laptop and ensure you can see your new Media sharing SHARE and can view files on it. Get the IP of your media sharing comptuer (type IPCONFIG in a dos screen of your computer and look for IPv4 address for your ethernet adapter) Then go to WiiMC and setup your settings to look at files on your Media share.

After all this is running, emulate the exact same settings for your NAS box, but I would recommend no user name or password on your share, to make it easy for ALL your media playing devices to connect to it. If you worrried about security, remember, we are only talking about making open access to all your media (aka videos), nothing to do with your core OS (Windows) files.

Home this works out well. 😐

If anyone is having “Install Failed” error when trying to run Tantric’s IOS58 installer. You can try this

-Ensure you have HBC Backup installed (refer to Mauifrog’s mod manual). It uses a different base then standard hbc ios58, so you can safely nuke ios58 and STILL run a version of HBC (Backup)
-ensure you have Tantric’s IOS58 Installer in apps folder
-get MMM-58-61_Hackmii_0.8_BB2.zip and put boot.elf into sd:appsupdateHBC . I found this in Bannerbomb v2 for 4.2e Wii system. This is the standard HBC installer. You just run this later from HBC to update itself so that it’s using ios58
-copy AnyTitle Deleter to apps folder and run it from HBC Backup, delete ios58, reboot
-go into HBC Backup, run ios58 installer, it will now work and not fail, reboot
-go into HBC Backup, run the last program that will not have a cover image but is in the directory “updateHBC”. Run it. This reinstalls HBC into ios58

    Your done!

p.s. I found deleting ios58 from MMM failed, and you still could not reinstall ios58 any way I tried.
Below does not work, IMO 🙁

If it’s a usb drive that you are watching the videos from, go here

    http://www.wiimc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1033

You would want to run the usb drive test program and submit the results. Also, it might be very useful to download previous versions of WiiMC and see if they work. I have found “sometimes” the automatic download of WiiMC is bad, and I need to grab a fresh zip copy and manually put it on the SD card (apps folder). It happens… 😕

    Another Wii (Red)
WiiMC 1.2.0 crashes periodically, but not all the time. Used to be able to repeat the crash by exiting a video then starting a new one. Now no longer crashes consistently (I think because I moved the drives around)

Seagate usb 3.0 1TB Seagate = STAY1000102 (Power Saving Mode disabled in Seagate Manager)
    single fat32 partition
    😳

Periodic crashes in WiiMC, but not all the time. WiiMC ver 1.2.2 (Blue Wii)
usb 2.0 2TB Seagate drive = ST2000DL003 Firmware: CC32 with VanTech Enclosure = NST-300SU-BK green mode hard to disable and drive spins down on it’s own after a while. (tried hdparm hdparm -K1 -S0 /dev/hdd and hdparm -Z /dev/hdd to no avail). Used http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/
    single fat32 partition
    😳
Tried usb penstick as per Tantric, WiiMC still failed, I think it’s an issue with my WiiMC code itself. Did ios58 reinstall and HBC reinstall to ios58 as per below, WiiMC still crashed on penstick. Copied WiiMC ver 1.2.0 from Red Wii, videos on penstick now work well, probably was a corrupt auto download of WiiMC ver 1.2.2. Now need to test WiiMC 1.2.0 on 2TB usb 2.0 drive above.

    Current configuration for WiiMC:
    Homebrew 1.0.8 using IOS58 V 24.32
    WiiMC 1.2.2 using IOS 58

Question 1) when I run a System Check and get this in the csv log
    “IOS58 (rev 6176): USB 2.0”
Does that mean I have the right version of IOS58 installed ? Note, I AM NOT running Darkcorp, this is a Mauifrog mod, System Manager 4.1. As well IOS58 Installer is giving me “Update Failed” error. I have read that this can be ok, unless running Darkcorp. 😕

    Question 2)
Can/does IOS58 have the ability to deal with “green” drives effectively like D2Xv6 and above can? For example, will running WiiMC, which uses IOS58 going to prevent a “green” usb drive from spinning down, while WiiMC is running ?

    Question 3)
on the line above “Homebrew 1.0.8 using IOS58 V 24.32”, what is the V24.32 in reference to? Seems IOS58 is rev 6176 as per System Check

My RocketFish 3.5″ USB Pata enclosure for my WD 160 eIDE drive actually works wonderfully in WiiMC, but I can’t get it to work in any usb loaders for games. I’ve tried cIOS 249 with base 58 with no luck in WiiFlow, CFG, or USB Loader GX. Any ideas as to how to get loaders to work? Is WiiMC doing anything special that the loading programs aren’t doing?

I would try reformating and reload. Maybe try using fat32format.exe . 2TB external enclosure works well for me for Config USB Loader using D2Xv7-final, but it’s freshly formated fat32. I am though having the reverse problem, WiiMC is crashing after 1 hr of play.

    Install D2Xv7-final slot 247, Base 57, revision 21007
    Install D2Xv7-final slot 248, Base 56, revision 21007
    Install D2Xv7-final slot 249, Base 56, revision 21007
Configurable usb loader on slot 248
Mighty Channels works perfectly, slot 249 by default
